How To Effectively Implement Business Change Management

Business change management is a very important part of the planning for any business in uncertain circumstances. To a degree, all businesses are affected by changes in both market conditions, and advances in technology. Even traditional businesses such as accountants are continually having to adapt to advances in both hardware and software, even though their basic business activity and customer base remains unchanged. For a high technology business, change is even greater, and is inherent in the very nature of the business. The ability to be able to adapt to this change is critical for business success.

Planning of business change management is best carried out in the context of an overall business plan. When you are deciding the future direction of the business, you are well advised to start by working out where you want the business to go, and the best way of getting it there. Get a piece of paper, and write these things down. At one extremity of the paper, write where the business is now. At the other, write down your future vision for the business. In the space in between, you can write the steps which the business will need to take to move from one to the other.

Once you have determined the overall direction of the business, you can work out how changing conditions can affect your plans. It may simply be a case of adjusting your plans to compensate for a small change in market conditions, or it may be a case of making radical alterations to cope with a permanent change in technology, or in market sentiment. These changes can then be incorporated into the revised business plan.

All of this will be easier to do if you forsake the traditional paper based model, and use computer technology instead. By putting the business plan in a word processor document, or even a text file, you will be able to add unlimited lines to the business strategy plan, between one extreme and the other. You can also make unlimited changes to the document, and prepare as many different versions as you need. By circulating your electronic document to different departments, you can gain a lot of relative input.

Getting input from different departments is vital for business service management. This is the concept whereby every department in the business is seen as a provider to customers, even if they have no contact with the end consumer. The other departments of the business are classed as the customers. By involving every department in this way, it will be easier to cope with change, and to see how change affects each aspect of the business. Improving the efficiency of each individual department is so important in improving the company's performance in changing conditions, and is one of the pillars of business change management.
